As a counselor, I have seen many parents run themselves ragged trying to be “The Perfect Parent” to their teenager. When their efforts fall short and the relationship with their teenager is lacking, many parents can feel frustrated and disappointed. Here are some myth busters of how to be the Perfect Parent.

In order to have a good relationship with my teenager, I need to:

Shopping with little children for school uniforms for the first time can be very stressful for everyone. Children are stressed because it is a new experience and they are unsure about everything. Parents get stressed because they have to bear a lot of expense and have a lot of things accomplished in a very short time. Even though the back to school shopping for kindergarteners is for small sized things, it can still be as expensive as shopping for big kids who wear the same things.

Any adult who has suffered from stomach problems, dental work or simple curiosity and has eaten a jar of baby food can tell you its no mystery why kids fling that stuff all over the kitchen. Ground up carrots and peas, rough textured meat paste and tasteless applesauce are certainly not going to pass through many lips easily. As one mom at a conference said, “the secret really isn’t what my baby eats; the secret is how to get it in him.” Fortunately for moms determined to feed a fussy baby a healthy meal, advances in the basic tools of feeding have been made.

As the average age of men and women in the Armed Forces rises, many are a part of the Sandwich Generation, concerned about caring for family members at home as they continue their service to the country. Their burden becomes especially apparent on Veterans Day, a time for all of us to pay tribute to American veterans of all wars.

We are all fairly savvy to the fact that we live in an increasingly global society in which our neighbor is from Ecuador, our colleague is from France and the person who teaches our child is from Sweden! We realize as adults how difficult it is to learn a new language after our youth, but we keep reading that it is the perfect time for our own children to begin the language learning!
