“Caleb it’s time to take out the trash.” The fight following that simple request was like a tornado ramming into the house and taking off the roof. Screams erupted and before I could back out of his room we were in a shouting match over a chore that would have taken less than two minutes if he had just paused his game long enough to get it done.

Everyone knows being a parent isn’t easy.

In an ideal world you have your children and hopefully raise them so they grow into responsible young adults who make their own way in the world. Of course there are stages, which are difficult, but usually everyone comes out okay in the end, and although you always worry you have the hope your children will eventually be able to look after themselves

However, for parents of children with special needs it’s a whole different ball game. It’s a huge responsibility, which never gets easier and can consume families.

A recent survey by the Lucille Packard Foundation for Children’s Health found that for parents, the most concerning aspect of their children’s lives is emotional well being. As a parent myself, this is not shocking, but it does make me want to hear more.

Emotional wellbeing is at the root of all decision making. When we feel good about ourselves, we want to treat ourselves and the people around us well. If children are not feeling good about their lives, they more than likely will make poor choices and in turn will not feel happy.

Many expectant mothers often overlook the role diet can play in their baby’s overall health and nutrition. The popular adage “eating for two” isn’t quite what is necessary, in fact, there is such a thing as gaining too much weight when it comes to pregnancy, (most physicians agree that 25-40lbs is optimum). An expectant mother should read up on prenatal health and diet and speak to her doctor about the foods she should eat, and those she should avoid to give her baby the best start in life.
