Are the parent of a teenager? If you are, have you ever been asked by your teen to be a fashion model? While a large number of teens who want to be fashion models are girls, there are some boys who also wish to do so. Although your teen may wish to become a teen fashion model, the question is should you let them?

Admission to top colleges and universities has never been more difficult.

Harvard broke all records this year, accepting just 7.1 percent of applicants, while Yale accepted 8.3 percent, Columbia 10 percent, and Princeton 9.3 percent. Brown and Dartmouth accepted 13 percent and 13.2 percent, respectively. Williams, Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Amherst Colleges accepted 16.3 percent, 18.4 percent, 18.3 percent, and 14.2 respectively. Swarthmore College granted admission to a record-low 15 percent, while the University of Pennsylvania admitted 16.4 percent. Boston College admitted a record-low 26 percent of applicants, and Duke reported record selectivity admitting 19 percent. The overall Ivy acceptance rate this past year was 12% — again, an all time low.

An evil is stalking the world now that wasn’t here when I was a kid. Maybe it’s been here all along but as a kid I never saw it lurking near the cotton fields of north Alabama. We knew what the devil was of course, from going to the West Huntsville Baptist Church every Sunday morning and evening, but I don’t think it entered our minds to think he was walking down the same road as us.

If you’re the parent of a teenager, then you know how teens like to keep up with the latest fashion trends. This is understandable, as teens are trying to establish their own identity, outside of identifying with their parents. However, there is the likelihood that some of these fashions may seem inappropriate, even to the most lenient of parents, and especially to those who are more conservative in nature. You don’t really want your daughter in short shorts, or low cut tops, and you probably don’t want your son looking like a thug or hoodlum. Where do you draw the line between your teen dressing in trendy fashions and dressing inappropriately? Perhaps, more importantly, how do you draw the line?

It’s that time of year again. You see it at the mall; hear the ads on the radio, and even in the whining of every student. It is “Back to School” season! Whether you are a parent that welcomes the return of normalcy, or one that hates to see the summer end here are 7 mistakes to avoid having a poor academic year.
