I watched as my three year old grandson was wheeled out of the emergency room fastened tightly to a gurney with a huge head brace encircling his tiny head. I arrived on the scene just in time to tell him that I loved him as men with medical equipment ushered him out to an awaiting helicopter. He was being flown to a larger hospital where a specialist for his kind of head injury was waiting to perform an operation on his brain to save his life. Both of his parents had tears streaming down their faces as they helplessly watched their beloved child being flown away.

Without any hesitation my son threw an entire glass of soda on my new wife while we were waiting for food in a restaurant. I don’t even remember what the argument was about. It was just a small difference of opinion that escalated as if spurred by a demon force that wanted to destroy my marriage!

In a flash, what was going to be a fun time with dinner and a movie, turned into whom did I love more, my eleven year old son or my new wife. Immediately I paid for the pop and we all left with me doing everything possible to chastise my son and comfort my wife.

“Caleb it’s time to take out the trash.” The fight following that simple request was like a tornado ramming into the house and taking off the roof. Screams erupted and before I could back out of his room we were in a shouting match over a chore that would have taken less than two minutes if he had just paused his game long enough to get it done.

The storm raged against the bow of the ship reminding the pilgrims the cost of freedom. Freedom to believe in God the way they wanted to worship Him. Freedom to govern themselves without the constrains of a culture built on classes because of a person’s wealth and position. Freedom to work in jobs of their own choosing and not ones that were passed down from generation to generation because they were in the poorer lower class.

The beautiful rays of the sunset dimmed and darkness began to blacken the night sky. Clouds crept slowly in blocking the moon and the stars. All at once what once was filled with beautiful light was now animated with the expectancy of a fierce storm.

It was as if the night had a plan to go on the hunt for those who were carefree and secure in their worldly life. Unsuspecting people who thought they were safe and secure in the lives they created for themselves. People who lived for pleasure and did what was necessary to get what they wanted no matter who it might hurt.
